“Amigos de Fuego” (Friends of Fire) is the title of Rick Frisbie’s latest series of paintings. Thirty-six of his colorful paintings on canvas, and additional paintings on paper will be in his solo show at the Lincoln Art Center. The opening reception will be Friday, May 10, 2019, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and will be on exhibit through June 29, 2019.

“The inspiration and initiative for the series come from my friends and the people of Guatemala,” Frisbie said.

Rick visited Guatemala twice during the last year.

“The land of volcano fire and poverty is also home to people of passion, color, ingenuity, dancing and determination”.

Frisbie intends to capture some of that vigor in his paintings.

Poet Joe McKenzie will be Rick’s special guest at the opening. Frisbie says he asks Joe to read because of his passion that he exhibits in his poetry and his reading of poetry. He will be reading several of his newest poems and have copies of his recently published book for sale. McKenzie used one of Frisbie’s paintings for the cover of his book. Frisbie & McKenzie are both of Salina.

This exhibit is free and open to the public Tuesday-Friday Noon-4:00 and Saturday 9:00 am to Noon at the Lincoln Art Center, 126 E. Lincoln Ave., Lincoln, Kansas 67455. For more information call the art center at 785-524-3241

LINCOLN – “ZAP”, featuring the work of Judy Love, Tom Leopold and Gene Sievers all of Zeandale opens at the Lincoln Art Center Friday, March 10 from 5:30 – 7:30, with a gallery walk at 6:15. This exhibit runs through April 29, 2017.

Judy Love moved to the small unincorporated town of Zeandale, East of Manhattan, while teaching art at Kansas State University. ZAP, Zeandale Art Project, is a little arts community giving workshops, classes and gallery shows for the past 30 years. Judy paints with pastels and is featured in The Gallery of Great Things on the Big Island in Hawaii and by the Strecker/Nelson in Manhattan, Kansas. Judy’s pastel paintings are a collection of some of her landscape work over the last twenty years. She is also exhibiting a series of small, semi-sculptural acrylic paintings inspired by iridescent beetles.

Tom Leopold recently returned from photographing life on a small island off the coast of Honduras where fishing is their livelihood. As a veteran, he has photographed soldiers returning from war and the people of San Francisco. He is currently photographing a unique construction project on the Kansas State University campus. Leopold has photographed many shop windows. He says, “When the camera is our “eye” it melds inside, outside and reflections into a composite image. I see these images as almost abstracted compositions.”

Gene Sievers is with Kansas State University’s Department of Art, Wood Shop Supervisor since 2000. Porcelain and white stoneware are the clay bodies of choice for utilitarian, wheel thrown and altered pottery. An off white surface allows for a wide glaze palette. Sievers’ Raku pots are fired with an off-white glaze, so the fractal patterns interact with the contours of the form. Sievers says, “I strive for my pots to exude a quiescent grace and elegance of movement—exploring the space in and around them with a dancer’s proprioception.” He has his work in collections at the Sabitini Gallery, Topeka, Beach Museum, Manhattan, Yoshi Ikeda, Portland, Oregon, and Emprise Bank, Wichita.

This exhibit is free and open to the public Tuesday-Friday Noon-4:00 and Saturday 9:00 am to Noon at the Lincoln Art Center, 126 E. Lincoln Ave., Lincoln, Kansas 67455.

LINCOLN – “Spaces, Places & Things”, featuring the work of Ken Klostermeyer and Roger Prochaska, both of Salina, opens at the Lincoln Art Center Friday, November 11 from 5:30 – 7:30, with a gallery walk at 6:15. This exhibit runs through January 3, 2017.

Klostermeyer began his career with a studio art degree from Bethany College, then taught pottery at Marymount College and Kansas Wesleyan University. Wheel thrown stoneware and porcelain incorporating a variety of decorating techniques, including carving, incising, application of oxides and glazes, constitute the majority of his works. Ken’s ceramics have been exhibited in invitational shows at Bethany College, Marymount College, the Smoky Hill River Festival, and the Birger Sandzen Gallery, the Bluestem Gallery, Bergen’s Gallery and Kansas Artist and Craftsman Association exhibits in Wichita, Topeka and Hays. This show represents a retrospective of Ken’s work, illustrating his use of a variety of clay bodies, techniques and glazes.

Prochaska’s paintings are inspired by a number of subjects but especially early western life, the first pioneers, settlers and cowboys. Many of these individuals have an emotional story that can be told though their eyes and hands. His goal is to have his audience come away with an experience of quiet introspection.

This exhibit is free and open to the public Tuesday-Friday Noon-4:00 and Saturday 9:00 am to Noon at the Lincoln Art Center, 126 E. Lincoln Ave., Lincoln, Kansas 67455.

New in 2016, the Lincoln Art Center began offering a wine and paint class each month, called “Gogh Paint,” based on the popularity of such classes at other venues around the Midwest and it has been a hit in Lincoln, KS too.

Everyone is invited to join the classes, no previous artistic talent or experience required. The most important thing to remember is convince a friend (or two or three) to join you for an evening of jokes, laughter, silliness, and maybe even a sense of accomplishment too when it is all said and done. Each month a new scene is announced, so you want to sign up early to guarantee your spot at the table.

Lincoln Art Center director Joyce Harlow acts as the class instructor and sets everyone up with a canvas, sometimes with pre-drawn images, and the acrylic paint and brushes to get started. When everyone has arrived and settled with a glass of their favorite beverage (BYOB), she starts at the beginning with suggestions on where to start, what colors to use (or how to mix them) and what brush is best. She progresses the students through each step towards completing a full scene, with tips on how to manipulate the brushes to create texture and movement for a realistic look.

In the end, whether it’s the wine talking or not, everyone is usually all smiles and proudly photographing their new artwork for all their friends to see!

“Orbs, Shapes & ‘Scapes,” featuring the work of Yadi Flannery and Martha Flannery, Santa Fe, N.M., and Nancy Henry, Prairie Village, Kan., opens at the Lincoln Art Center, Saturday, July 2, from 5:30 – 7:30, with a gallery walk at 6:15. This exhibit runs through Aug. 30, 2016.
The connection between the three artists is the interest they all have in design, texture and tone. Each of these artists create works that speak about experimental works from an internal, rather than external experience, to express some aspect of their world.
Yadi Flannery now lives and works in Santa Fe after spending three years on a farm near Beloit, Kan. “My work is Alternative Medicine, my alternate life is a quilt artist beginning as a teen.” Yadi’s work has been shown in various venues in New Mexico, Colorado and most recently at the Lincoln Art Center. This new body of work takes a “collage” approach incorporating scraps of fabric, clippings and throwaways largely untouched and pinned and stitched loosely. Yadi credits her inspiration for the collage quilts to the year long attendance at the Lincoln Art Center’s “open studio” on Tuesday evenings.
Martha Flannery has been beading and crafting jewelry for 35 years. She has branched out from beading to working with various metal pieces. “I love handling brass, copper, bronze and sterling silver, and watching them change through the process of hammering, torching, wrapping, riveting, stamping and patina work.”
Nancy Henry began her exploration into painting in 1991 with watercolors, and has since moved into pastels and acrylics. Her work has been shown in the Peterson Gallery in Santa Fe, galleries in Rociada, N.M., and Las Vegas, N.M., as well as many other shows and exhibits for several years.
Nancy and Yadi have collaborated to focus on using color and arrangement of color in new expressions of landscapes.
This exhibit is free and open to the public Tuesday-Friday, noon-4:00 p.m., and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to noon, at the Lincoln Art Center, 126 E. Lincoln Ave., Lincoln, KS 67455.
